Home Moving Tips
Here are some tips from us that will make your life that little bit easier when moving to your new home.
Before your move:
Make a list
Chances are you will have a lot to do...and therefore a lot to forget! Make a checklist of all the things you need to do and arrange as well as a list of things you need to pack. It is also a good idea to clearly label all of your packing boxes and make a list of what is in them.. This will make things easier after your move when you are trying to locate specific items!
Use a professional removal company
Contact Akers Services with details your removal to arrange a survey for a quote. Whilst some people think they can move their belongings in several trips in their car, by booking a removal company we can take the stress of lifting, loading and unloading away from you, as well as reducing the risk of any damage to your property as we use large vans, with furniture blankets, covers, straps, and carry all the neccessary tools to get the job done.
Collect boxes
You will probably need lots of boxes, and most likely more than you think! You may be able to pick up boxes from local businesses, supermarkets, or from family or friends who have moved recently. Alternatively you can purchase or loan boxes from us.
Redirect mail
Many people forget to do this. All your post will need to be redirected to your new address. This can now be done online via Royal Mail's website.
Pack an overnight bag
Chances are, after a day of moving, you will be too tired to start unpacking your things. Ensure that your essential items are within easy acces i.e. a change of clothes, documentation, keys and toiletries.
Electronics
Take a photo of how your electronics, i.e. TV and Computers are wired up so that you know where all the cables go after your move.
White Goods
Remember to defrost your freezer at least a day before your house move.
Furniture
If you decide not to make use of our furniture dismantle and assembly service and prefer to do this yourself, it is important to make note of how you took the item apart (if you have lost the intructions) and ensure that you keep all loose screws and bolts in a safe place. It is a good idea to store them in small clear bags and clearly label what piece of furniture they belong to.
On the day of your move:
Take meter readings
Take meter readings of both your old property and your new property the day you move out / in. It is a good idea to take a photo of the meter rather than just noting it down.
Check your new home
Check that all the items, fixtures and fittings that were included in the sale are present and correct. If anything is missing, contact your solicitor as soon as possible. If you are moving into a rented property, you will also need to check that everything advertised is present and correct, and report any problems or damages you see. If you don't report them now, it could cause a problem when it comes to getting your deposit back at the end of your tenancy.
Plan the rooms for unpacking
You will never get everything unpacked in the first day. Review the rooms and plan which rooms you will unpack first. If you have the space, plan a storage area or room to keep the boxes that are waiting to be unpacked.
Meet the neighbours!
It's always easier to introduce yourselves to your new neighbours to break the ice as soon as possible after moving in.
Relax
Dont forget to chill some champagne to toast your new home!
